How to Think of Universe Materialistically and still dematerialize it

We shall cease to think of 'matter' as inert and passive body, awaiting the imposition of form from without, or as like the atoms of Democritus, lumps of impenetrable solidity, only to be moved by the shock of collision. Matter is not simply like the steel of which the spring is made; it is like the coiled spring in which the latent power of movement is stored.
